My top ten favourite places in York

My top ten favourite places in York.

Hi, I’m a second year Human Geography student here at York St John University! In my blog today I am going to be telling you my top ten favourite places in York. These can be explored during one of our open days, decision days, or even in your new home city if you decide to study in the historic city of York. I have split my top ten recommendations up into places to grab a bite, shops, and sights! Enjoy!

Grab A bite

1. SOPHiEs York – SOPHiEs on the river is the perfect place to grab a bite of lunch, sit by the river with a fresh smoothie, and enjoy the city of York passing by! With two locations on the Lendal and Skeldergate Bridge, SOPHies is a fan favourite.

2. The Fat Badger – Located right next to Bootham Bar the Fat Badger is my favourite pub in York. Whether you’re basking in the pub garden with a pint or enjoying proper pub food it is not one to miss.

3. Aly’s Bakery – Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? Located a two-minute walk away from campus on Gillygate, Aly’s bakery is the perfect spot to grab a freshly baked slice of cheesecake. With it’s classic and unique flavours it’s the perfect way to finish the day off! (My favourite is the chocolate).

Retail therapy

4. Scribbler – Down Stonegate stands Scribbler, a quirky shop specialising in niche cards, stationery and jelly cats. With it’s never-ending selection of gifts scribbler is the perfect place to browse…and laugh.

5. The Shop that must not be named – Any Harry Potter enthusiasts? If so, you’re in the right place! Down the famous shambles is the shop dedicated to all things wizard and witchcraft. Whether you’re after a wand or a brand-new robe this shop is one of the best tourist attractions and certainly a must see!

6. The Society of Alchemists – 30 seconds away from the Shop that must not be named is the Society of Alchemists. Now this shop is like lush but with a uique twist. It’s a perfect place to stock up on perfume and funky-looking bathrooms. Oh, and don’t be surprised if you are met with a dragon.

Things to do and see

7. The Minster – The heart of York is in the shape of a cathedral. Hard to miss, York minster is a must see when visiting the city of York. Whether your viewing it from the outside or inside (York students have access to the inside for free with student IDs) it is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

8. Museum Gardens – After a busy day walking and exploring around York the museum gardens is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Perfect in every season it’s the ideal place to have a picnic, read a book, or walk around with a hot chocolate.

9. The River Ouse – Running right through the centre the Ouse is the perfect activity for families or with friends. Whether you are walking down the embankment, sitting enjoying an ice cream or even sailing on the river. The Ouse is hard to miss!

10. Clifford’s Tower – Once part of a medieval castle, Clifford’s tower is the last remaining part of York Castle. It is perfect to get panoramic views of the city from the top or even to sit and watch the sunset.

I hope you have enjoyed my top ten recommendations from York! No matter what you are doing, York is the perfect city to explore whether you are new to York or have lived here all your life – there is always something new to discover. Have fun!
