A Day In The Life
As a music student I often try to keep as productive as I can be while also giving myself enough time to relax so I don’t overwhelm myself. I do this by giving my day structure and planning out for myself what a regular day looks like.
8:00AM: Starting the day
Most mornings, I try to give myself enough time to be able to relax before the day properly begins. I take time to get ready and not rush through the process, which is getting breakfast, dressed and maybe practising some music. Often, I find planning what I will eat or wear the night before helps me feel more at ease for the day ahead. Once I am properly prepared for the day, I take a 40-minute walk to university where I am either with my flatmates or listening to a playlist.
10:00AM: Lecture
When I go to my lecture, I prepare by making sure I have the correct equipment. For example, as I do music, If I have a composition lecture, I know I need to have my notebook with me. Or if I have a solo performance lecture, I know I need to have an instrument with me and a piece of music to play. Through being prepared, it sets me up to get what I want to get out of my lectures.
12:00PM: Food/Break
During my breaks, me and my friends will get lunch at the University canteen or Coffee from the Student Union Lounge. Due to their convenience and good prices, they feel like the obvious place to be able to refresh between lectures and rehearsals.
1:00PM: Rehearsals
In my afternoons, I’ll often have another lecture and if not, I will be in rehearsals for bands. As a third-year music student, I must lead a band so I will often spend afternoons leading groups towards a performance. Most often these groups will perform in the Lunch Time Concerts held Wednesdays in the Creative Centre auditorium.
4:00PM: Wrapping up the day
Usually around 4 is when I finish University and I will go back home to make food before I have anything on in the evening. This gives me a good chance to relax and reflect on the day I have had, especially if I have had a rehearsal as I need to think about how I can continue leading bands in the future.
6:00PM onwards: Evening Plans
On evenings, I will either be meeting up with friends, most likely the student union if I want a social night or I will be at more rehearsals. Evening rehearsals for me are different however as they are in preparation for a musical I am in. If I have nothing on in the evening, I will take advantage of this time to make sure I am relaxing to balance the day out and let myself recharge. This is usually by watching movies.
