Why I chose York St John as my university is more than because they offered my degree. YSJ has its foundation rooted in values that aligned with my own. This made choosing YSJ an easy decision!
Questions I Asked Myself
As I researched universities, there were a handful of questions I asked myself. The most important question was, “where would I feel the most supported?” As an international student, not only was I looking for a university that had my course, but I was also searching for a home away from home. I wanted to be part of a university that made me feel supported in my transition and the years I would be spending there. I found it important to look at the values the university stood for and where the campus was located.
Discovering York St John
Since I was searching for a university overseas, this made it difficult to attend open days. To gain as much information as possible I did a great deal of online research, as well as looking at the social media pages for the university. Seeing York St John through the eyes of students gave me the insight I needed to see what kind of environment I was going into! As well as research, I communicated with the international team. The global team’s immediate responses allowed me to ask questions and receive clarification, but it also made me feel welcomed here at YSJ!
Why YSJ Was the Right Choice for Me
There were many of reasons why York St John resonated with me. The most influential factor is the university’s awareness and fostering of mental health. Alongside this, I loved that YSJ had been voted school of the year for social inclusion. Knowing I would receive support and care in a new community gave me the reassurances I needed to decide. Not only does personal well-being flourish here at YSJ, but the location seemed too good to be true. York is a cozy town with many places to explore. Being right next to the city center means YSJ is the perfect place for social gatherings, shopping, and grabbing a cup of coffee at one of the many shops in town!
Advice for Future Students
I am currently attending YSJ for my second degree. As someone who has attended university before, the most paramount advice I could give to you, a university seeking student, is to be patient. Take your time to research universities and what they have to offer. Look at the degrees provided, but make sure the university ensures you feel as though you have found a home away from home. If you find one that piques your interest, follow the social media pages and see where the campus is located. Interacting with social media groups and seeing the school’s location will provide you with insight on whether it is right for you. Finding your university is a wonderful journey, enjoy the process!
