Bonfire Night in York

I was unaccustomed with the history of Guy Fawkes as an international student. The experience of Bonfire night not only enlightened me on his story, but showed me the beauty of tradition here in York.
Upon Arrival

As I approached one of the locations for the firework display, I could hear from a mile away screams of excitement. Upon entering, my senses were flooded with sounds of laughter and conversation and the welcoming scent of food. Food trucks for donuts, sausages, and various other street foods occupied the grounds. Alongside these, there was a fun house and a high roller for those who dared! I immediately felt the excitement and liveliness from everyone around me.
The Fireworks – My Favorite Part of the Night
Time ticked away as we all eagerly awaited the start of the fireworks show. I stood closer to the front of the crowd as I waited. Around me, sporadic conversations occurred. I watched as people met up with friends and kept themselves warm with steaming cups of hot chocolate. Once the stadium lights shut off to queue the start of the show, all conversation stopped. Anticipation buzzed through the crowd until, finally, we saw the first set of fireworks released into the night sky. Whooping and hollering emerged from the crowd, along with sounds of admiration.
Bonfire Night as a Student
Even though I attended the firework display solo, I didn’t feel alone. Everyone I encountered was warm, welcoming, and ready to chat. Bonfire night is such a widely celebrated event here in York, that I even ended up running into multiple friends. For any student looking to feel more connected with the community in York, attending a firework display is the best way to go! Make sure you bundle up, the firework display is one you won’t want to end!
Practical Tips
Bonfire Night is full of fun but it’s always good to remember the basics so the fun doesn’t have to end early. When attending a firework display, make sure you remember these items:
- A warm coat
- A hat or earmuffs
- A portable charger
- Your wallet and keys
Bring these items along with you to secure your night of enjoyment and entertainment!
Autumn Events
This year, I attended the firework display at Acorn Rugby Field, but there are many locations all over the city. Guy Fawkes, the man who unsuccessfully tried to blow up the House of Lords, created a long-standing tradition. Bonfire Night is one of many traditions and events to experience here in York. Around this time of year, York puts on events that last all throughout the season. From live music, food and drink themed dinners, film nights, and (the most anticipated event) York’s Christmas Market. There is an event for everyone to enjoy during this festive season. Maybe I’ll see you at the next one!
