Why I Chose YSJ as the university to attend and how I found the experience being Neurodivergent.
Stressful and complex ordeal was how I would describe being neurodivergent and selecting a university. I knew I wanted to study English Literature and Creative Writing. Moreover, I wanted a university that would be suitable for me and provide me with a sense of community.
York
York stood out to me with its strong connections to writing and literature. York Literature Festival attracts large crowds and celebrates remarkable authors and diverse interpretations that evolve the literary scene. York is also home to many cozy coffee spots dotted around the city. Additionally, the city is also home to many historical sites, taking my interest and writing inspiration.
York St John
YSJ took interest because of the smaller size campus. The YSJ website and social media really helped me learn more about the university and what student life would look like which really helped me envision myself here. YSJ also has recognition for being voted highly for student experience and inclusion, providing me with more insight to student life and the image of community.
My Open Day
After attending an open day, I immediately fell in love with the university. I was in awe seeing the campus in person. Most importantly, I instantly felt valued and welcomed. This helped provide a sense of community I was searching for. The University’s smaller size compared to many others enhances this.
On this open day, I spoke to staff on the Disability team and Wellbeing team. After that conversation, I was reassured that my needs would be met. After this open day, I could stop thinking about YSJ. Overall, coming in person made me realise then that York St John was the university for me.

Furthermore, signing up to Clearing advantage emails is also something I encourage. I did not go through clearing myself. However, many of my peers did, and they all expressed how useful signing up to emails really helped them.
Although, the university selection process is daunting at times, you need to make the most of it. Focusing on potential negatives can take away from this rewarding experience. You should enjoy looking at all the different campuses and planning your future.
