What I love about YSJ!
Hi I’m Keira, a second-year Politics and International Relations student here at YSJ. I’m here to share what I love most about being a student at York St John University!
Arriving at YSJ
When I first arrived at YSJ, the beautiful campus stood out to me the most! It’s so lovely see the variety of different architecture while wandering around campus and somehow it looks stunning no matter the weather! Since YSJ is on the smaller side for a university, it really feels like a community, especially when you see the same faces around campus! For me, I found this really comforting when moving away for uni – a home away from home!
My Highlights
I have so many highlights about my time so far at YSJ! From the lovely coffee shops and study spots on campus to the academic support there’s so much to love! Every student at YSJ has an academic tutor as your first point of contact for any issues or concerns you may have about you uni work! This is a great addition to the support and wellbeing network at YSJ as you can book in their weekly office hours as frequently as you wish! One of my highlights is attending Paint ‘n’ Sip at the Student Union! For only £7 you get a hot drink of your choice and a piece of pottery as well as access to paints and brushes for a really relaxing (and student budget friendly) social with friends! Another of my highlights is such great access to York city centre! Since YSJ is located on Lord Mayor’s Walk with all accommodation only 10 minutes away, there’s no need to spend money on public transport and you can enjoy the city between lectures!
My Experience
YSJ has allowed me to experience living in a city I’ve always loved and gain independence by living in great student accommodation! With such an amazing sense of community and warmth, YSJ is much more than just a uni and gives such a great well-rounded student experience! For me, student life has only improved over time as I settled in. At the start of first semester, I was quite homesick (which is perfectly natural and experienced by most students), so as I’ve made York home, I’m enjoying uni more and more!
Advice for Arriving at YSJ
Remember, your uni experience is unique to you and it is what you make of it! Try to join a society or two and throw yourself in to life here at YSJ! However, it can be overwhelming at times so I’d also recommend taking time for yourself – maybe try a new hobby or read your favourite book! If you’re feeling nervous about joining uni life that’s natural and everybody really is in the same boat! Just keep going – it may take a little time to make a new place home, but it will become home!
Enjoy joining uni life!
Keira
