Managing Money and Part-Time Work!
Hi I’m Keira, a second-year Politics and International Relations Student here at YSJ! I’m here to share my advice for managing money and part-time work alongside your university studies!
Finding my Part Time job!
I work part-time as a Student Ambassador at YSJ! It’s a great part time job on campus, with flexibility around my studies and various different shifts to work! I found this job offer advertised on the YSJ instagram and the website as well as posters dotted around campus! Make sure to have a check on social media for any on-campus opportunities as well as on Handshake! You can find out more about this at Careers and Student Opportunities. Working as a student can be challenging at times, with deadlines and work shifts all at once. Remember to plan your time a few weeks ahead of deadlines to make balancing the two commitments easier!
A Typical Day at Work
For me, my shifts vary from school visits on campus to visit UCAS fairs to promote YSJ and the student life! I love the variety of different shifts and typically work 9:30am-2pm! This is especially good as it means I can work and still have time left in the day to work on my uni assignments! I’ve learned so much while working part-time from time management and organisational skills to communication and digital skills!
My Experience
Part-time work is a great way to be able to top up your student budget in addition to student finance, allowing you to get involved in all student life has to offer from joining a societies to sweet treats! For me, I set myself a monthly budget and split this in to weekly budgets! This is a great way to spread money out throughout the month, while also bearing in mind that some weeks will be more expensive than others (especially when you need to buy cheese)!
Tips and Tricks
I’d recommend looking on Handshake for part-time work and social media pages of both YSJ and various businesses around York! With new shops opening around York, new part-time work opportunities are opening up! Remember, York is very much a student city, so many businesses offer part-time work, which is student-friendly! Make sure to have your CV at the ready to be able to apply to different jobs when you see the advertisement!
Good Luck looking for Part-time work!
Keira
