My 3 favourite things about being a York St John student

Hello there, my name is Melody and I’m a 2nd year Creative Writing student here at York St John University. In this blog, I want to share 3 things I love about being a student here.

The Students’ Union

York St John’s Student Union is one of the warmest and most welcoming communities I have ever seen. I was incredibly anxious to put myself out there, but it’s paid off immensely. From paint and sip to pride marches, I’ve loved every event I’ve gone to.

Although I enjoy my classes, I also enjoy the relaxing atmosphere going to the SU brings. It’s also been great to interact with the LGBTQ+ and disability network and be able to socialise with others like me.

If you’re looking for something outside of your studies, this is the place to go.

The Student Hub

Recently opened in the Holgate building, The Student Hub is a place to find the support you need at university. There’s loads of seating whilst you wait around for appointments and going up to the desk doesn’t feel stressful. On top of that, the Student Hub website makes it so much easier to book any appointments I need.

York St John has always been great at providing support when it’s most needed, and the Student Hub is a great addition. Returning in September, I was pleased with how much it had improved.

Now, though, it’s one of my favourite places to be. As I mentioned before, the new seating is a much-needed edition that I love. Booking for the study booth’s go fast so it’s nice to have other options available.

Another thing I love about the new student hub is the visual indicators for where to queue up and the check-in screen that makes waiting for appointments barely an inconvenience. On top of that, staff are very friendly and welcoming.

If you’re looking for some help, this is one of the best places to go.

The Library

One of my most favourite things as a YSJ student has been being able to access the library. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s been a huge benefit and aid in my studies. When you enter your first year, you’ll be advised to use the full services the library has to offer to your benefit.  My advice would be to listen to that advice. The library has everything you could ever need to study, from books, eBooks, and journal articles to quiet study rooms.

They also have a feedback wall where they take advice to heart, and they even take time to reply to comments. Not only that but the staff at the desk are super friendly and helpful and they offer lots of study support.

Being able to access the library has made my studies way less stressful. Need support with your learning? The library is one of the best places to go.
