What I Love About Being A YSJ Student

Behind every student who attends York St John University, there’s a unique story and reason why they love being here. For me, the joy of being a YSJ student comes from the staff support and the friends that I have made.

The ‘Firsts’

I knew I would enjoy York St John before stepping onto the campus. Since I was coming from the United States, I had been emailing university staff for a few months before my move. The global team at YSJ was warm, welcoming, and organised. The teams’ responses provided the clarifying information I was looking for. Plus, an idea of how I would be supported as a student.

When I first stepped on the York St John campus for a visit, the blend between old and modern buildings instantly caught my attention. The architecture on campus adds to the cosy feel of YSJ. As an international student, the older buildings really added it the unique experience I was searching for as a new YSJ student.

I was sure the early weeks after moving into my new home would be chaotic. However, YSJ proved early on that my transition to university would be relaxed. As someone who loves to plan, I felt relief when YSJ Student Life sent out a welcome week planner. This email provided me with a timeline of events and support sessions to guide my first weeks of settling in.

My Time at YSJ

Becoming a YSJ student in September has shaped my life in new ways. In a short period of time, YSJ has become home. I have met like-minded friends, improved academically, and been provided with opportunities to see the world. One of my favorite parts of university is YSJ’s global opportunities. Regardless of the course you choose, you can explore the world. The global opportunities range from volunteer work to summer school learning a new language. Pretty cool, right?

Along with academic opportunities, there are many social events. As a YSJ student, you will always have a chance to meet new people. Whether it is joining a society, going to a night out event, or attending a talk on campus, you will always feel surrounded by friends. I have found many like-minded friends here and continue to do so because of how social the university is. I will always have YSJ to thank for introducing me to the wonderful people I have met here.

Advice From a First-Year

When beginning your student life at York St John, it is all about getting out of your comfort zone! Attend the social events and gatherings put on by the university. This will allow you to meet new people, and the people make the place. Finding your people will aid the settling in process and settle the nerves of being away from home. Once you meet new friends, time will fly by as a YSJ student. That’s what happens when you are having fun though. The people and memories you make alongside them will shape you and your university experience. I know it has for me.
