Part-Time Work at University

Going off to university is the beginning of stepping into your independence. Enhancing this independence can mean earning your own money to support yourself. Although the idea of working part-time while studying can be intimidating, here are a few tips to ease the idea from someone who has done it before!
The Search
When looking for part-time work at university, there are many routes to take when job searching. York St John does a wonderful job supporting us as students looking to work by putting on a job fair at the beginning of the year. Throughout the following months, the university continues to offer opportunities for students on Handshake! If you are unsuccessful at the job fair, there is no need to worry. Indeed is an easy-to-use app that helps you search for part-time work based on your skill set. Create your CV beforehand as well, then it is ready for employers to see and shows that you are organized and prepared!
Managing Your Time & Money
Although having your own funds is a powerful addition to your newfound freedom, it is important to remember that you are at YSJ for your studies. When searching for a job, make sure to not over work yourself. Be honest with the number of hours that will work best for you. Many employers are understanding about you being a student and will accommodate to your time. Along with managing time between work and university, it is important to keep up with your social life. Finding time to relax with friends during the week gives you a good brain break from studying and working.
Managing your well-earned money is easier than it seems. One way to do this is by using the Blackbullion app. This is a finance help app that provides tips and information to help make you feel supported. One of my favorite tips from Blackbullion is the 50/30/20 guideline. Which means, fifty percent of your earned income is put towards the groceries and other necessities you need. Then, thirty percent of your income goes towards a savings account, while the remaining twenty percent can be used towards any extra wants.
