Studying Media Production at York St John University: My Experience

I chose to study Media Production at York St John University because it offered many different topics to study, from social media and podcasting to creating documentaries and short films. It allowed me to explore different areas of the industry, as well as grow and develop new skills. I wanted to study at York St John because not only is it in the middle of a beautiful city full of inspiration, but the university is also equipped with great filming equipment, studios, and edit labs.

Course Highlights and Practical Experience

One of my favourite things about the course was taking part in the Langdale Trip. We had three days to create a documentary about the trip, and the other groups were creating short films. Those 3 days were great, and we made a great documentary that had a comedic element to it.

At the University, I spend a lot of my time at the Student Union in the Lounge because I enjoy studying there or socialising with my friends.

Learning Style and Course Modules

I found a lot of the modules to be interesting, in my opinion. I did find learning how to use new equipment and new tools on the editing software to be quite engaging in the modules. You’re not just shown how to use them; you’re also following along and setting up the equipment yourself or editing something yourself, and I liked that as someone being a hands-on and visual learner.

One aspect of the course that I like is how they want to help get you prepared for the real world by getting you industry-ready with learning how to work with clients, build your social media and networking skills, as well as creating a cv.

Industry Experience and Opportunities

Throughout my time at York St John, I have taken part in a shadowing work opportunity with the BBC in Leeds. This is one of my favourite things I’ve done. It was a really great experience, I got to work in the TV studio, meet the presenters and journalists. I edited some actuality and some graphics.

I also had the opportunity to go out on the road and film news pieces, as well as learn how to operate their equipment and film some footage myself.

Future Plans and Postgraduate Study

Once I’ve finished my undergraduate degree, I am planning on continuing to study at York St John for the postgraduate media production course. I want to stay here for postgrad because I love the support you get from the university and the course lectures too.
