Next steps, offers, and other plans!

Hi! I am Tia a second year Human Geography student here at York St John University. In today’s blog I am going to tell you why I chose to apply to YSJ, and what made me pick coming to this university and choosing university in general over other plans after leaving college! I hope you find this blog useful if you are confused on what you want to do after your college journey.

How I discovered YSJ

My introduction to YSJ happened during the last month of Year 12. My college were advertising the summer school that we run over four days. I applied to go as I was interested in exploring York as a city and seeing what the university had on offer. After my four days were up, I knew straight away that this university was one of my top choices. The following November me and my parents came to the open day where we got to speak to the lecturers on my chosen course. In December I submitted my personal statement to my college, in January I received my offer to study at YSJ. Finally, in February I chose YSJ as my first choice and was fully enrolled once I received my A-Level results in the August.

Why did I choose YSJ?

During my first year of college, I was interested in attending many different universities. I chose YSJ for a variety of reasons. One thing I wanted when choosing a university was for it to be further away from home. This was to justify living in the accommodation. However, I didn’t want to be so far that getting home would be tricky. York is perfect for me as I’m from the North-West, so it only takes me 2 hours on the train to get back. Another thing I loved about YSJ is the size and location. The campus is very small and friendly. We’re only 5 minutes away from York Minster, where we get to graduate. When I first heard about that, I was amazed! The city is full of history, quirky independent shops and many little cafes perfect for you to study in with your friends.

Why did I want to come university?

At first, I was not interested in attending university as I did not know what I wanted to do in the future. I was quite set on completing an apprenticeship after college. However, I did not want to go straight to work. I decided to pick a university for many reasons. For example, I wanted to gain independence by living away from home and learn new life skills. I wanted to also have the typical university life with my course mates. On my degree, we can go on trips to different places across the UK, such as Edinburgh. Coming to university is also great if you are interested in studying abroad or travelling to different places. Students have go to places such as America, Canada, and Australia. University is also a great place for you to meet lifelong friends and get constant support with your future career choices.

I hope this article helps you navigate around the many different options you have after you leave college. University will not be everyone’s choice and that is perfectly okay. If you are interested in choosing higher education, I hope my story can help you decide on where you want yours to begin!
