Inside an Art and Design Portfolio Interview Day at York St John University
Helping Prospective Students Start Their University Journey
As a student ambassador, I have many opportunities to participate in events for prospective students beginning their university journey. One of my favourite events is portfolio interview days for art and design subjects. Being the first friendly face that applicants see on campus, I get to witness those nervous and excited jitters from everyone when they step through our doors. (Many applicants lug those massive portfolio folders with them, which never cease to impress me!) I love to catch glimpses of everyone’s amazing creativity and hear all about the unique specifics of their art and design interests. I really get to see it all, from those huge illustrative masterpieces to impressive digital graphic designs. Yet in every event, applicants always seem to surprise me with their unique creativity!
After applicants settle in with a nice, free drink and biscuit and a quick briefing for the day, it’s time for a campus tour. Of course, the applicants are here to showcase their skills and passion, but we must show the amazing things that YSJ has to offer, too!
Showcasing YSJ and Its Creative Facilities
As I take everyone on campus tours, it’s time to highlight what makes YSJ special and, of course, explore all the art and design facilities! Our art students always have something new on display! Last time there was a life-sized sculpture of a horse in the foyer!
Then it’s time for the applicants to wow our academics with their passion and creativity. Seeing the relief and joy on their faces when they come back is by far my favourite bit! Finally, they can count a job well done and have a well-deserved trip around York!
