York’s Independent Bookshops

Filled with many shops, York is a hotspot for independent businesses. The best ones? The fun book shops that fill every nook and cranny in the city center.

The Bookshops

Whether you are looking for a new romance, sci-fi, or history book the independent book shops in York provide a read for every student. As a full-time student at York St John University, my time seems to be filled with reading. Although my studies are stimulating, it is always nice to find a read that gives me a brain break from my modules.

Exploring the Shops

York is a city full of history, and its independent bookshops are part of what makes it so special. Bookshops have always appealed to me as a student since they feel calm and inspiring. They offer a quiet break from our busy university lives. York’s independent bookshops are perfect for readers on a budget!

When I first explored York’s bookshop scene, I was impressed by how many independent shops there are! Each one is within walking distance from the YSJ campus or an accommodation. Each shop has its own unique personality for you to experience.

My Top Three Shops

One of my favorite bookshops is the Minster Gate Bookshop. Located right near the York Minster, it is filled from floor to ceiling with books. The shop feels traditional and cosy, and you could spend hours in there browsing their selection. Often times, you will be able to find academic texts, new releases, and classics with unique covers — all at a reasonable price.

Criminally Good Books is another standout. As the name suggests, it focuses on crime, mystery, and thrillers! The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, with a very knowledgeable staff. This bookshop is a great place to find affordable fiction, whether it is during spooky season or simply another Tuesday.

A smaller but charming shop is the Little Apple Bookshop. This shops feels bright and welcoming, with a strong focus on independent authors. It is a lovely little space to explore when you have free time between classes, as it is only a five minute walk from the YSJ campus.

All three shops offer affordable finds for students!

As a Student

These bookshops support my studies by offering a quieter space and access to books beyond the provided reading lists. York’s bookshops also support wellbeing by giving me and other students a place to relax.

While browsing these shops, look for second-hand sections and books. As students we are always looking for budget friendly options! Staff members will always have great recommendations. When you do choose to visit, the weekdays or earlier in the afternoon are ideal times to visit.

I would encourage students to explore York’s independent bookshops and support these local businesses! These shops offer more than just books — they offer comfort and creativity. One of my favorite discoveries was finding a unique cover version of ‘Little Women’. Moments like that make exploring York’s independent bookshops truly special!
