A beginners guide to societies
Hi, I am Tia a second year Human Geography student here at York St John University. In today’s blog I am going to tell you about societies, what societies I am in and the benefits of joining a society during your university experience. I hope you enjoy my blog.
My experience with societies
During my first year of Uni, I joined the EmpowerHer society – this society was a safe space for women and people who identified as women to come together and do a range of different activities such as glass painting, quizzes, hot-chocolate dates and bouquet making which was a personal favourite of mine. This society enabled me to network and make some good friends. It also allowed me to become a social sec which is a job within a society. My role was to create and plane new exciting and different socials for the society. This was a great society for me to join during my first year as it helped me gain confident and establish myself within the university.
Now in my second-year I have joined two new societies. One being The Geography society which is a course related society which enabled me to meet different people on the same degree in different years. This is a great society as I can ask questions abput the course and help other people on the course too. I am also a member of the Dance Party Fitness Society which is a great society for me as most of the classes are on a Sunday evening. This helped me get a great start to the new week by being active.

Why should you join a society?
Joining a society is a great way to make friends that have similar interests to you. At YSJ we have over 60 different sports and societies available to students. These range all the way from Football to Doctor Who society. There are many different ones available whether you are looking at societies related to your degree of maybe you want to try out a new hobby. They are an amazing way to end your free time to outside of studying, part-time jobs, or placement. Every Wednesday is the day where societies and sports club will meet in the Student Union and then venture out into town, but if drinking and clubbing are not your scene all societies will have sober activities and events on too.
I hope my blog has helped you understand what a society is and why these are great for you to join at university. I will also say that if a society you are interested is not available at the university all you need is 3 likeminded people to create one! Which is a great experience too.
