Cosy cafes in York, perfect for studying

In these cold winter months, I often find myself lacking in motivation to get my assignments done and just want to curl up in bed with a hot mug of tea. However, from living in York for over a year, I have found the perfect way to gain motivation to study whilst also being cosy and comfy. This is by heading to a lovely café in York city centre and settling down with a drink of my fancy and my notebook.

Getting ready to go out, paired with a quick walk in fresh air, clears my head. Which means when I find the perfect study spot in one of my favourite cafes, I’m ready to just crack on with my work. There is something special about the aesthetic lighting and decorations, the gentle noises of coffee being made, and the quiet muffle of chit chat in the background that stops me from becoming distracted, allowing me to get lost in time and get my work done.

My top two favourite cafes that I recommend are ‘200 degrees coffee’ and ‘Black Sheep Coffee’. They are both situated in the city centre, making them accessible if you’re looking for a study spot between lectures.

In 200 degrees, you will find a welcoming, warm vibe with many students working away on their laptops, so if you go in to study for a few hours, you will definitely fit in with the crowd. The dim lighting, soft background music, and free WIFI make it the perfect environment to concentrate. In terms of price, you may be looking at £3 to £4 if you want a specialty drink. So not necessarily the cheapest, but definitely top quality. The quietest times that I would recommend that you make a visit would be early mornings or mid-afternoons on weekdays.

Black Sheep is another very popular spot for students, which I personally love for its trendy, unique vibe (and it’s amazing passion fruit and mango matcha). Like 200 degrees, it has a chill atmosphere with soft lighting and non-distracting background music. That’s not even the best part. If you’re looking for a great student deal, this will certainly become your new favourite spot with certain hot and iced drinks at £2 on Mondays and a 20% student discount on everything every day. The best times I would recommend avoiding a busier atmosphere are weekday mornings and any evening (closing times are 7pm Monday to Saturday, allowing you to pop in for a chill evening study session after a day of lectures).

If you’re eager to find some more of your own favourite cafes in York, the best way would be to take a stroll around the city centre and have a peek into any cosy environments that catch your eye. This is how I found the Bruks café and The Old York Tea Room, which I have popped in with my family and friends for a hot chocolate and sweet treat when they have come up to York for a visit.
