YSJ Society Spotlight!

Two students stand in front of the York St John Students' Union building, smiling and talking.

Hi I’m Keira, a second-year Politics and International Relations Student here at YSJ! I’m here to share the societies and sports clubs that have caught my eye! There are so many societies to choose from and there really is something for everyone!

My Experience!

Societies are a great way to meet new people, make new friends and participate in everything student life has to offer! For these reasons, I was interested in joining a society and looking at all the options available! From football and rugby through to British Sign Language and Tea Society – there’s so much to choose from! When meeting all the societies at both Freshers’ (in September) and Refreshers’ Fair (in February), Mountaineering society stood out to me the most, offering access to Red Goat Climbing Wall and many different socials! I absolutely love mountaineering society and would highly recommend joining a society as part of your YSJ journey!

Society Highlights!

My top three societies that I have been interested in are: Feminist Society, Tea Society and Debating Society! All offering weekly sessions, chilled socials and even campaigning and fundraising, these are great societies for meeting new friends in a fun and relaxed environment! Recently, Feminist Society were invited to collaborate on the government petition ‘Make Misogyny a Hate Crime’ to present to parliament! Societies are welcoming and friendly communities, while also taking part in important campaigns and raising awareness! Make sure to have a look at all there is on offer to meet like-minded people and make new friends! Find out more about all that’s on offer here: https://ysjsu.com/activities

Societies in the Spotlight!

I have loved doing different societies, like EmpowerHer and Mountaineering Society! I have met lovely people and made great friends! I’ve also learnt new skills, like bouldering and greatly enjoyed my society choices! It may feel daunting at first, but putting yourself out there by joining a society may be the best decision of your YSJ journey! You may discover a new passion, new skills and new friends! Remember, if a society you’d like to join doesn’t exist yet, you can create it! Find out more about starting a new society or restarting a past society here: https://ysjsu.com/activities

Tips and Tricks!

Make sure to look at YSJSU’s website to see all societies on offer and how to join! Also, Freshers’ and Refreshers’ fairs are both great opportunities to meet societies and see if you’d like to join! If you’re undecided about which society to join, I’d recommend taster sessions before committing to a membership! Find out when taster sessions are taking place here: https://ysjsu.com/events! Remember, it’s natural to feel nervous about meeting new people when joining a society, but still try out a taster session or two – you never know, you may find the perfect community for you!

Enjoy exploring all the societies on offer!
