A week in my life
by Elaina, Psychology with Counselling
Student life can vary drastically from day to day, and that’s the fun part. There’s always something different going on to change up your week. That being said, let me talk you through what a week in my life looks like and then how some of my weeks bring new, fun and different things.
Monday
Mondays begin with a 10am research methods lecture (thankfully, I don’t have any 9am lectures). I usually walk back home as I have a good few hours before my seminar. I grab some dinner from Asda and spend time doing some uni work. Then I go back up to campus for my research methods seminar. After a small break, I’ll head to the dance studio, as on Monday nights I have contemporary and burlesque. We’re currently learning dances for our summer show. I’ll head home from campus at around 9:30pm.
Tuesday
On Tuesdays, I go to my two afternoon lectures (Social Psychology and Brain and Behaviour). I’ll then head straight to the dance studio. Tuesdays are my favourite evenings as I get to teach two dance classes. First ballet, where I’m teaching a dance to Piano Man by Billy Joel, followed by jazz, where I’m teaching my students a Disney Villain-themed dance. I’ve found such a passion for teaching and enjoy every second. Like Mondays, I’ll head home at around 9:30pm.
Wednesday
Wednesdays are a free day on my uni timetable. This week, I spent the afternoon in the library with my friend as I have some assignments and exams coming up.
Thursday
Thursdays have been one of my busiest days recently. From 12, I have a workshop and then a seminar. I then walk to York Mind for 3:30pm, as I volunteer there as a young person’s support worker. I work with young people who are suffering with their mental health. We do fun activities, such as painting and playing games, to help them settle and initiate conversation. The session finishes just after 7, and I will then head back to the uni campus. After an hour’s break, I joined my final dance class of the week.
Friday

Friday is another free day on my uni timetable, and this week I spent the morning visiting my new favourite café near the uni, Chocolate & Co. We got hot chocolates, matcha and a bacon sandwich. It was a lovely refresh and break from a busy week. The hot chocolates also fuelled a good few hours studying in the library.
The Weekend

Weekends for me are often very different from week to week. This weekend, my boyfriend’s family came to visit, so we spent a day walking around town, doing some shopping, and visiting the Golden Fleece for tea (the most haunted pub in York, apparently). However, in previous weeks I’ve taken the bus to visit Whitby, gone to the student union bar for a pound-a-pint and karaoke Saturdays, gone to the cinema and had a meal out, and even just had a pyjama day.
As you can see, there are many aspects to student life beyond studying, and you have plenty of time around your uni timetable to make each week your own and spend it doing what you love.
