Support for you at university
Hi! I’m Jas, and I’m a third-year uni student at York St John. Today’s blog will be about different support at university that I didn’t expect to use, but were actually really helpful. Everyone needs help and support sometimes, especially at uni, but we don’t always know where to get it or what kind of help we need. However, the University has some great support systems for whatever your queries may be.

Career advice
For some people, coming to uni and finding a job is simple, but for those who have come to university but don’t yet know what to do after, the careers team can offer great advice for anyone unsure.
Based in Spring Pod in Holgate building, you can book careers appointments or go to a drop-in and discuss any concerns you may have.
They can provide you with links to specific jobs or internships, show you websites where you can apply, or simply support you with any worries you have about finding a job.
Wellbeing
Being at uni can be stressful and very difficult, so everyone will need some support at some point. With the wellbeing and welfare service, you don’t need to struggle alone. They are there to support you with any challenges you may be facing during your time at uni and will help you as much as possible.
This service is based on campus in Holgate, but they can provide in-person or online appointments depending on what works best for you. Booked sessions may be weekly, with the same person, or you can otherwise attend a drop-in session without booking.
Other support the welfare team can offer is creating an LAP (Learner Adjustment Plan). With them, you can discuss any modifications to your studies and adapt them to your needs. They are very compassionate about providing support.
Either way, the support team are there to listen to any problems or queries you may be having and direct you to the right place.
Academic support
When arriving at university, you may be allocated a lecturer from your course to be your academic tutor. With them, you can discuss different support you may need with assignments or modules you may be struggling with.
Library support services are also a helpful academic team, who can assist you finding books, understanding referencing, and also how to use certain online tools that may assist you with your learning.
The Student Hub
The Holgate reception desk is where you may go for any queries about campus and university life. Here you can book appointments with staff (including the wellbeing team), get the contact details of other alumni, pick up media equipment, or speak to the accommodation team.
The accommodation team are incredibly helpful in answering questions about contracts, how to rent, or how to find and apply for housing, whether private or with the University.
This service is essentially a hub for all enquiries, though they may not be able to answer all questions, they will be able to point you in the right direction.
Sometimes you may walk past these facilities and don’t even realise they’re there or what they offer, but they may be exactly what you’re looking for. Whichever support you use, the university staff are there to support you as much as possible and are always happy to do so.
It is not embarrassing to reach out for help if you need it, so don’t be afraid to contact them.
