Best Picnic Spots in York
Introduction
Hello, my name is Melody, and I’m a second-year creative writing student here at York St John’s. In this blog, I wanted to share some spots around York that are perfect for a picnic.
York St John’s Campus
Whilst there are plenty of wonderful spots in York to have a picnic, it would be a grave injustice if I didn’t mention the many picnic spots on YSJ’s amazing campus grounds.
Want to relax outside on a sunny day? Well, there are plenty of picnic benches all around campus. Though if I had to recommend a spot, I’d have to pick the benches outside the creative centre as it has a nice view of the whole campus.
York Walls
The city walls are not only a cornerstone of York, but they are also a must-do that you can visit and walk around for free. Whilst most can walk around it is also a pretty good picnic spot, as on some of the walls there are benches to rest and have a little bite to eat.
Though if you do want to have a picnic on the walls, please allow space for passing by; please be polite and, most importantly, don’t litter! If you follow those rules, you have a perfect space to relax.
Museum Gardens
I was introduced to the museum gardens when my older brother invited me for a picnic with the rest of his family. So confidently, I can say that the museum gardens are one of the most ideal places to relax in the sun; with the docks nearby, it’s not a spot you want to miss out on.
For any food lovers out there, the gardens also have a truck that sells vegan ice cream. Like the walls, it’s one of those spots that I recommend you visit at least once.
York Minster Gardens
And finally, whilst York Minster is incredible, the Minster Gardens also have a lot to offer. Near the Minster, the Minster Gardens are a perfect hang-out spot on a sunny day. Alone or with friends, it’s the perfect place to relax.
The Minster is free for all YSJ students, and the gardens are open to everyone. If you want to avoid the crowds, I’d recommend going during the weekdays. The best part is that there are lots of picnic tables where you can sit and take in the wonderful sights of York.
