Societies at York St John
Hi, my name is Tia! I am a second-year Human Geography student here at YSJ. In today’s blog I am going to be talking about all things to do with societies. If you are unsure on what a society is don’t worry, you are in the right place! A society in simpler terms is a club you can join to make new friends, join in with a range of activities and do something you truly enjoy. Societies vary – we have over 60 societies here at YSJ ranging from Doctor Who to Geography Society. Societies can either be interested based, or even relating to different degrees!

My experience!
During my first year in late September, I attended the freshers fair. This is an event (usually on a Wednesday) where you have the chance to walk around many different stands and talk to all the societies and sports clubs to see which one is most interesting to you. Most societies will offer fee taster sessions where you can attend one of their events for free to make sure you really enjoy/like the society before buying a membership (usually around £10 for a year but can vary). I joined the Empower Her society which is a great society for like minded women to meet up and do various activities from bouquet making to glass painting. In my second year I am now in the Book Club which allows me to keep up with my passion for reading.
Why societies are so important
Societies area great way for you to make friends outside of your degree, part time job, and housemates. Meeting people who have similar interests to you is a great way to make yourself feel comfortable at uni especially during your first year when things may seem quite new and strange. The great thing about societies at YSJ is if you and 3 other friends have an interest and what to join a society based off of this interest but there is no society that has been established – you can create one! You can pitch it to the student’s union, and they will offer you money to create this society and set up events.
I hope you have enjoyed reading my post all about societies at York St John.
Tia
