Finding a part-time summer job

Welcome back to our blogs helping you make the most of your summer holiday. If you worked out your budget following last week’s blog, you may have realised that you’ll need to pick up a job over the holiday. This week, our Careers and Opportunities teams have provided some tips to help you find a summer job.

Applying for an internship

When you think “internship”, you might imagine about working for free in a city that’s hours away – something that might be impossible for you, especially if you have children or caring responsibilities.

That’s why our Summer Internship Programme offers paid internships with local employers, across a variety of industries, for all students at all levels. All of our opportunities are paid, offered on a part-time basis, can be flexible to fit around other commitments and, depending on the internship, could be hybrid or remote. These are a fantastic way to enhance your skills, build professional networks and improve your employability while accommodating your summer commitments. Additionally, you will receive dedicated support from the York St John Internships Team, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience.

You can find all the currently advertised Summer Internship on Handshake – search Summer Internship.

Finding a Part-time Job

If you’d like to find a more permanent position, Handshake, our career management platform, is the place to find part-time work. We advertise a range of opportunities situated in and around York. If you haven’t activated your account yet, you can do this here and then create your profile. Having a stand-out profile will help you get noticed by employers and is a great way to highlight the skills and experience you may have already gained before you decided to undertake your degree. You can find a great booklet to help you set up your profile here.

We have part-time jobs on Handshake waiting for you to apply for now, with Disability North, York Designer Centre, Total Sports, Zatchels and many more.

As a mature student, you may have already gained skills and experience working before you came to university. Recruitment Agencies could be a way to find work which could fit around other commitments, using, and enhancing skills you have already gained. Some of the Recruitment Agencies we work with in Yorkshire and Humberside are Hays, Adecco and Brook Street.
