‘The Planet Mirrors Our Past’ Extinction Rebellion at Platform:YSJ Spark Community Theatre

Our ambition is to provide a space where students and communities can share ideas, work together and explore how a collective community can evoke meaningful change.

There is an increasing awareness of shared responsibility for our planet and the impact human choices are having on our future. Extinction Rebellion York hosted an Open Mic ‘Exciting Rebellion’ at Platform:YSJ Spark Community Theatre. The night consisted of poetry, music, storytelling and anything in between, helping people to see the bigger picture, bring ideas together and celebrate the power in human voices.

Comments From The Community

Louise Burley: ‘After coming back from a day of protesting in London, it was amazing to see so much support in York for Extinction Rebellion, and what they are trying to achieve, by organising such a great open mic night. It was very inspiring and uplifting to hear what everyone had to say about climate change or just by seeing everyone have such a fabulous time at Spark.’

Catherine Heinemeyer: ‘It was wonderful to link York in to the International Rebellion and give people the opportunity to express their hopes for what it might achieve through different art forms, as well as their concerns and fears about climate and ecological crisis. The Barberellas were honoured to take part and hope to do more to support York’s efforts to go carbon neutral.’

Voices Matter

York St John Students Union reacted to the current climate change emergency by hosting an Environmental and Sustainability campaign. Various protests and art demonstrations have taken place in York. This strength in community voice matters and has influenced what happens next. More details of the York branch can be found on Facebook as Extinction Rebellion, York.

Henry Raby, host of the evening, laid out stimulus’ for the audience to respond to. From this a crowd sourced poem was written by Henry:
