If you studied your undergraduate programme at York St John University or founder colleges, did you go on to postgraduate study?
No
Why have you chosen this photo as your YSJ snapshot?
Long hair, messy clothes, on a field trip to a ruin for a history course.
What are your fondest memories of York St John University?
No responsibilities, messing around, learning new things (not necessarily anything to do with the courses I took), and all those new people who’d come with utterly different backgrounds and experiences than I had. Fondest memories include learning aikido, arguing with lecturers, browsing the library, and crying with laughter at the idiocy of our actions whilst tired and emotional.
Why did you choose York St John University or founder colleges?
Because it was what I wanted to study; I’ve been to college before on a vocational course and got bored with it quickly so I decided I wanted to do something that wouldn’t lead necessarily to a job but which sounded interesting to me, hence linguistics.
What have you been doing since completing your studies?
It’s been a long time. I haven’t lived in England since I left college but lived in various countries around the world. I taught English in Greece, had some companies there, too, then moved to Italy to work, then Spain, then Greece, then Australia, then England for a short time, then Greece, then Switzerland, then Italy again, then Malta, etc.
What one piece of advice would you give to a current student, or one about to graduate?
Do precisely what you want to do, not what people expect or want you to do.
