Shining a light on alumni and how you can support our students

Jennie Cummings-Knight – Psychotherapeutic Integrative Counsellor

Class of 2008

MA Integrative Counselling

IF YOU STUDIED YOUR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME AT YORK ST JOHN UNIVERSITY OR FOUNDER COLLEGES, DID YOU GO ON TO POSTGRADUATE STUDY?

JOB:

Psychotherapeutic Integrative Counsellor – Golden Leaf Counselling Services.

WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS PHOTO AS YOUR YSJ SNAPSHOT?

The first (2010) shows me at a graduation event of my own Foundation Degree students from North Lindsey College at Huddersfield University…the second (2019) is a more recent photo of myself working in private practice, North Norfolk.

Jennie is wearing graduation robes outside a cathedral after graduating from Huddersfield University. Jennie has short brown curly hair.

WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES OF YORK ST JOHN UNIVERSITY?

Graduation in York Minster…friendships made!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YORK ST JOHN UNIVERSITY OR FOUNDER COLLEGES?

YSJ was close to my place of residence at the time (Doncaster) and offered an MA in Integrative Counselling.

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING SINCE COMPLETING YOUR STUDIES?

The University helped me to upgrade and enhance my skills, to launch my own private practice and develop my research interests. I am now a D Prof in Practical Theology student at Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge) in conjunction with the Cambridge Theological Foundation. My topic is researching the connections between “Patriarchy”, Monotheism and “Toxic Masculinity”. I feel that it is important to challenge society’s “shorthand” labels that result in oversimplifiying complex concepts, impacting on male and female relationships.

WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A CURRENT STUDENT, OR ONE ABOUT TO GRADUATE?

Read in depth on your subject from a wide variety of sources, and don’t just rely on google for quick quotes!
