2D Animator
Class of 2021
BA Hons Animation
If you studied your undergraduate programme at York St John University or founder colleges, did you go on to postgraduate study?
No
Job:
2D Animator for SpindleHorse Toons
Why have you chosen this photo as your YSJ snapshot?
Going through university with my classmates and graduating with them was the best feeling ever. There was only 8 of us in total and we became very close through the 3 years and spent lots of time with each other in and out of class.
What are your fondest memories of York St John University?
I miss lessons with Richard, he always made them so fun and interesting and they were always very chill, never stressful!
Why did you choose York St John University or founder colleges?
YSJ is a local university, its nice and small, all in one place and it’s in hecking YORK! Its a beautiful and relaxing city with all sorts of interesting old buildings and history and the campus had a similar vibe.
What have you been doing since completing your studies?
I got my first animation job at SpindleHorse Toons in summer 2020 during the pandemic, just after I had finished my 2nd year at YSJ. Just like most other jobs at the time, it was remote and I sat through my summer at home animating away on a Youtube animated project called Helluva Boss which has now blown up all over the internet! 3 years later, even after graduating, I continued to animate for them for them from home, full-time on a freelance basis. I not only did just rough aniamtion, but clean-up, animation revisions and I even helped out the leads of our department! It’s been so much fun meeting so many talented animators and artists and we come from all across the world! I feel very fortunate to be in this position and my former lecturer Richard has told me so many people have now joined the YSJ animation course because of my work on Helluva Boss. It’s an honour to inspire others, and I hope I can continue to do so in future!
What one piece of advice would you give to a current student, or one about to graduate?
Please take every opportunity that comes to you or you see that interests you! Don’t be scared to apply for certain projects, you never know where it might take you in the future. I didn’t think I was good enough to work at SpindleHorse, but I said “Screw it!” and applied anyway, now look where I am!
If you don’t go for these opportunities, you may regret it later.
