Alumni Magazine Crossword 2020: The Answers and extra information.

Who doesn’t love a crossword? For the 2020 alumni magazine we focused our crossword on general knowledge about York, York’s history and York St John itself. Did you manage to complete the crossword, or did some of our clues leave you baffled?

Across Clue answers

  • Clue 2: Name of the street which has pubs, clothing shops and a Betty’s tearoom. Stonegate.
  • Clue 10: Name of the church where real-life ‘Gentleman Jack’ Anne Lister sealed her union with Ann Walker in 1834.  Holy Trinity.

Clue 11: Which local gemstone is often found in Roman graves around York? 

Whitby Jet! A local gemstone composed of fossilised wood from the ancient monkey-puzzle tree, we usually associate Whitby Jet with Queen Victoria. Whilst Whitby Jet has always been a popular gemstone, and often associated with mourning practices, during the Victorian Era it really gained in popularity due to the strict rules around mourning.

However, Whitby Jet has been a much loved gemstone for centuries. The Yorkshire Museum includes lots of Jet objects, including a pair of jet hairpins discovered in York. You can find out more on their website.

  • Clue 13: Name of the English Heritage site located near Coppergate. Clifford’s Tower.
  • Clue 15: Surname of the sisters honoured in a plaque on campus for their contribution to women’s education. Cruse.
  • Clue 17: What medieval tradition, resurrected in the 20th century, takes place every four years and documents biblical stories? York Mystery Plays

Clue 18. Where is Margaret Clitherow’s shrine located?

Shambles! Commonly called ‘The Shambles’, York’s iconic street name is actually just Shambles due to its past as the butcher’s street during medieval times. You can find out more about Margaret Clitherow’s shrine on the St. Wilfred’s Catholic Church website.

  • Clue 19: Name of the park which contains the Hospitium. Museum Gardens.

Clue 4: What is ‘that they should have life and have it more abundantly’ an English translation of? 

Motto! York St John’s motto has never been more relevant. Founded as a teacher training college in 1841, the original motto was in Latin and reflected the college crest. You can find out how our modern day mission continues to reflect our motto on our website.

  • Clue 5: The Phoenix building used to house what type of school? Primary.
  • Clue 6: Name of the twice yearly event held in the Students Union started by an Archbishop? Archies.
  • Clue 7: Name of the group of buildings on Goodramgate dating from 1316. Our Lady’s Row.
  • Clue 8: Name of the building where workmen claimed to see a group of Roman soldiers in 1953. Treasurer’s House.
  • Clue 9: Name of the film festival that holds events on campus. Aesthetica.

Clue 12: What did the Vikings call York? 

Jorvik! York is a city rich with a tangible history. Between 1976 and 1981, 1000 square metres of Coppergate were excavated to find archaeological evidence of Jorvik as a major Viking trading hub. They discovered exciting evidence as to what Jorvik’s residents ate, how they lived and even what they did for fun.

To celebrate this exciting period of history the York Archaeological Trust, who ran the original dig, host an annual Viking celebration. Due to COVID-19 they’re hosting it online this year. You can find out more about their online event and about Jorvik itself on their website.

Nowadays, York boasts a Viking Pub called Valhalla, two Viking themed shops called Asgard and The York Vikings, as well as a Jorvik gin from York Gin.

Clue 20: What was New Wing renamed in 2018? 

Ripon Wing! Renamed in 2018 to celebrate the incredible impact of Ripon College and its alumni, Ripon Wing houses most of York St John’s primary teaching classrooms.
