Are You an Alum Fighting for Social Justice?
CHANGING THE WORLD – ONE GRADUATE AT A TIME
Margaret Mead wrote: “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
York St John has a proud history of producing incredible, committed alumni willing to dedicate their working lives towards making society a better place.
A new project for the university’s Institute of Social Justice (ISJ) is seeking to gather some of these graduate stories together.
We want to tell the world about our alumni who are helping to tackle the big social, economic and environmental challenges of our time.
Over the course of 2020-21, Senior Lecturer in Journalism, Jonathan Brown, will be working with two students-as-researchers, Sarah Scott and Marcia Pearson, to record the exploits of YSJ graduates engaged in the struggle for greater social justice.
These stories will be published on the new ISJ website.
We are aware that as a university one of the biggest impacts that York St John will have on our world is through the choices and careers of our graduates.
We are particularly proud of our alumni who invest their time – whether through working, campaigning or volunteering – into changing the world and striving towards greater social justice.
These include alumni such as Jake Furby (pictured), a leading advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in York.
Social Justice at YSJ
The university has a long history of engaging its students in curricula that asks them to consider social justice impacts and inequalities.
This includes placement opportunities with partner organisations – including charities, social enterprises, arts companies, support organisations and schools – providing students with experience working with communities and individuals in a diversity of contexts.
