Farewell LMW accommodation – Andrew Chandler 1975-78
This summer we’re saying farewell to our Lord Mayor’s Walk accommodation blocks. After being home to York St John students for 57 years they will soon be making way for an exciting Creative Centre which will open in May 2021.
We’ve been delighted to spend some time talking to a few of the 8,000 former students who have stayed in the blocks, to hear some of their stories and tales of what it was like to live there through the years.
We were delighted to have a chance to speak to Andrew Chandler. Andrew studied Craft, Design & Technology at York St John from 1975-78, and spent his third year living in E Block, in room E10.
What are your first memories about moving into E Block?
“As it was my third year when I moved in, I had seen the accommodation before. But It was the pinnacle of student accommodation – the absolute best place to be. It felt really good to get in because they were so sought after.“
Are you still in touch with your flat mates?
“I was in touch with a few for quite a while but sadly lost touch a couple of years ago.”
What do remember most about your time in E Block?
“Above all else I remember it being convenient and comfortable. The rooms were really spacious and being so close to everything on campus was brilliant. I do also remember the bed sagged quite a lot in the middle!”
What was your signature dish?
“Lasagne!”
What was your favourite thing about living on campus?
“The social aspect was great, there was an amazing atmosphere. Everyone knew who everyone was and it was really friendly. We would often celebrate birthdays with parties stretching across a whole floor, like an open house.”
Anything else?
“It was just a fantastic college, I had an amazing time there. Everyone made you feel welcome. It was such a great environment.”
