November alumni newsletter 2022
Welcome to your November newsletter! Since your last newsletter we’ve enjoyed sharing news about Your YSJ Reunion, marked Free Wills Month and watched autumn come to campus. Our students have also enjoyed settling (back) into campus, and many will have submitted or be ready to submit their first assignments of the term.
This month, we’ll all be wrapping up warm and dreaming of the summer sunshine again! We’ll also be marking Remembrance Day, welcoming the Class of 2022 into our alumni community and announcing some information about Old Johns 2023.
An ultimate guide
As students settle in to life in York, we found an ultimate student guide! Including the best places to dance the night away, the best bars to check out and some top tourist attractions, how many of these did you visit as a student?

Remembrance Day
This month like many around the UK and world, we will be observing Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. On campus we will be joining the rest of our university community on Remembrance Day in the quad to observe our two minutes of silence.
At York St John, our Roll of Honour for St John’s students and alumni who died during World War One and World War Two is housed in the entrance to our chapel. Last year we posted a blog post including photos of some of those who gave their lives during World War One and Two. You can read it in full on our blog.
This year we will be posting a blog post with information and images about our time as a Voluntary Aid Detachment hospital during World War One. Please keep an eye on our social media to read it once it has gone live on our blog.
Aesthetica Short Film Festival
Aesthetica Short Film Festival is back this week! Featuring independent films, world-class industry sessions and fantastic networking opportunities, don’t miss your chance to take part.
Not in York, or already busy? Not to worry, Aesthetica are hosting a number of their events online with access until the end of the month.
Find out more and buy your tickets on their website.
Welcoming the Class of 2022
This month we’ll officially be welcoming the Class of 2022 into our alumni community. Spread over four days, a member of our team will be at each ceremony to clap each graduate across the stage and hand them their Class of 2022 pin badge.
If you have any advice for the Class of 2022, please share it with us by emailing alumni@yorksj.ac.uk.
A lot to blog about
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been posting blogs from some of our alumni! Whilst some saw their career move in an entirely unexpected direction, others discuss how their time spent with us was developed through their career.
- Read Neil’s blog about his unexpected career trajectory.
- Read Andy’s blog about how he’s circled back to geography after a career in education.
- Read Peter’s blog about his career and ‘retirement of sorts’.
Tomorrow we’ll be posting a blog from alumnus John about his career. Read it from 8:30am tomorrow.
We also posted alumnus Miles’ reflection on his first journey and weeks spent studying with us! Including a song that still takes him back to those student days, read it in full on our blog.

Thinking about a career change?
Completing a postgraduate course is a great way to re-specialise in a new field, especially one you might not have originally considered when deciding on your degree.
Have you ever considered teaching?
Return to learning and use your life experience to shape the futures of young people. You can choose to do either a Primary or Secondary PGCE at York St John. Becoming a teaching means entering into a rewarding and impactful career. You will work with our partner school in either primary or secondary school settings, teaching as you develop the skills to become an effective educator.
It’s always the right time to work towards gaining your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Plus, as an alum you’ll be eligible for 10% off your PGCE fees.
Find out more about PGCE options.
Or is Social Work something you’ve considered?
We are launching a brand new course to help those with a variety of degrees convert their skills into those needed in Social Work. Created in collaboration with professionals, individuals with lived experience and the wider community, our new Disability and Mental Health Social Work MA starts in January 2023.
