Our York 10k team: introducing Sally

With less than two months to go until the York 10k, we’d like to introduce you to the team running for our alumni-funded scholarships. Anyone connected to York St John can join our team, including staff, current students and alumni.

In our first blog, we’re introducing Sally, who works at York St John in our Alumni and Fundraising Office.

How long have you been running? Are you a regular runner?

I have been running on and off for the past 7 years but have only been consistent with it for the past 2. I’m not sure whether I would class myself as a regular runner, but I do try and get out a couple of times a week although sometimes life gets in the way!

When did you begin training for this 10k?

There wasn’t a specific time when I started training for this particular race, but seeing as I signed up to run in January you could say I officially started then.

Why did you sign up for this 10k?

Having lived in York on and off for practically my whole life, I have never run the York 10k and this was the perfect opportunity to do so whilst raising money for a fantastic cause.

You’re raising money for alumni-funded scholarships. Why do you think scholarships are important?

In an ideal world there would be no barriers to education but the alumni-funded scholarship goes some way towards supporting those who most need it to access the education they deserve.

What’s been the hardest part about training for this 10k so far?

Sticking to it!

What’s the best bit about training for this 10k?

There is just something about running around York where everyone you pass says hello or smiles and cheers you on your way and I can always rely on plenty of dogs to distract me along the route.

It’s tough work but so rewarding and I know that the money I raise will go straight to those students who need it most.

What’s your connection with York St John and what’s your favourite memory connected to us?

I started working at YSJ in July 2022 as part of the Alumni & Fundraising Team. There is never a dull day in the office and the camaraderie of the team creates a fantastic atmosphere to work in and raise as much as we can for the alumni-funded scholarships.
