Sports teams update – 2017/18
Sport has always played a big part in the lives of students at York St John University, with the history of many of our sports teams stretching back well over 100 years.
The vast majority of York St John teams compete in the British Universities & College Sport (BUCS) League programme against other universities across the country. York St John entered 36 teams In the 2017/18 season, who secured a combined total of 136 wins, 19 draws and 189 defeats over the course of the year, a win rate of 40%. With the season nearly finished the University are currently 93rd in the national league table out of 166 institutions.
Here is a roundup of how some of our teams got on this year.
American Football at York St John entered a team into the BUCS League for the first time ever, finishing bottom of 2A Borders League, but the team and the Students’ Union are looking forward to seeing how they perform next year.
Our Badminton Women’s 1st team finished 2nd in Northern 3B League, while the Men’s 1st team finished 4th in Northern 4B League. The Men’s 2nd team finished 3rd in Northern 5B League.
Basketball Women’s 1st team won 8 out of the 10 games they played this season and finished top of Northern 3B League. The Men’s 1st team finished bottom of the Northern 4B League but are looking to enter a 2nd Men’s team next season.
The Football Women’s 1st team finished bottom of the Northern 2B League after a tough season.
Our Football Men’s 1st team finished 2nd in the Northern 3B League, while the Men’s 2nd team (i2i Red / Blue Team) won the league and gained the greatest number of BUCS points out of all of our teams this year (23). The Men’s 3rd team finished 3rd in Northern 5D League, the Men’s 4th team finished 2nd in Northern 6B League which was ironically won by our Men’s 6th team! (who will now be promoted) Our Men’s 5th team finished 4th in Northern 6D League and the Men’s 7th team (i2i White / Yellow Team) finished 2nd in Northern 6D League.
Futsal Women’s finished top of Northern 2A League.
Futsal Men’s 1st team finished 5th in Northern 1A League, the Men’s 2nd team won the Northern 3B League and Men’s 3rd team (i2i) finished bottom of Northern 4B League.
Our Hockey Women’s 1st team finished bottom of Northern 3B League, the Men’s 1st team finished 4th in Northern 4B League, which is a massive improvement on last year.
Netball Women’s 1st team finished bottom of Northern 2B League, and the 2nd team finished bottom of Northern 6B League, the 3rd team finished 3rd in Northern 8B League, the 4th team finished 4th in Northern 8B League, and the 5th team finished 5th in Northern 9B League. Netball are also looking to enter a 6th team into BUCS next season due to large amount of interest this year.
Rugby Union Women’s 1st team finished unbeaten and won the Northern 3B League.
Rugby Union Men’s 1st team finished 3rd in Northern 3B League and Men’s 2nd team finished 9th in Northern 5B League.
Tennis Women’s 1st team finished bottom of Northern 3B League and Men’s 1st finished 4th in Northern 5B League.
Our Ultimate Frisbee (Outdoor) team finished 8th in Northern 2B League.
Volleyball Women’s 1st finished 7th in Northern 3B League and the Men’s 1st team finished bottom of Northern 3B League.
Our Cricket 1st and 2nd teams get their season under way at the start of May
