How do I protect my copyright?

An tutor has been in touch to ask for the best way to protect the copyright of teaching materials.

The first thing to say is that copyright is an automatic right, and does not need to be registered, nor does it require a copyright notice to attain protection.

However, it is a good idea to add some simple information to your material, namely the year created and the name of the creator or copyright owner. A sample copyright statement would read © Copyright 2016. York St John University.

This is good practice as it means that people who want to reference or reuse your material will have the full details that they need to do so.

You may also want to consider applying an open licence such as Creative Commons to your work.
