Developing Students’ Self-Agency: A Coaching Approach to Personal Tutoring

February 20 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

woman mentoring

Do you wish to see your tutees taking more of an active role in their learning experiences? Are you interested in developing your tutees’ sense of personal responsibility and increased self-awareness?

Studies indicate that coaching practice in an educational setting has many benefits such as improved wellbeing, greater resilience and enhanced academic performance. A holistic approach to academic tutoring goes beyond information-giving and focuses on individual student growth.

Delivered by Jelena Matic, Senior Educational Developer at Nottingham Trent University, this practical workshop will help you to develop your own confidence and capability to apply coaching skills in the tutoring context. By adopting coaching techniques into your academic support, you can equip your tutees with lifelong learning skills and foster a more profound, transformative learning experience.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand what coaching is and how it can make your tutoring practice more effective
  • Use Whitmore’s GROW coaching model for 1:1 tutoring conversations
  • Apply coaching skills in group and 1:1 settings
  • Develop your confidence and capability in applying coaching skills in the tutoring context

Please note that, in preparation for the workshop, UKAT have created a short online learning module (M213 Coaching and Mentoring Approaches) in the UKAT VLE, which Jelena would like all participants to engage with as pre-work for the session.

In order to sign up, participants will first need to create a UKAT account if they don’t already have one (which can be done by completing the online form at UKAT – Higher education academic advising and personal tutoring | Affiliate Membership). They will then need to login into their account, visit the page UKAT – Higher education academic advising and personal tutoring | Syllabus, and click the Register for this course button.

The course has been added to the free courses available to YSJ staff, so you should see the course listed as free to register if you are logged into the UKAT website.
