Equipping personal tutors and module leads with the tools to support mental wellbeing in our students

September 20, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A seminar taking place at the London campus.

Please note: following the news of the Queen’s funeral on Monday 19 September, this online CPD session has been rescheduled and will now take place on Tuesday 20 September, 14.00-16.00pm, via MS Teams.

As academics, personal tutors and module leads, we are not called on to solve all of our students’ mental wellbeing issues. However, we can help to create a safe environment for our students to discuss these issues and develop good practice in resilience and mental wellbeing. We can also embed positive pedagogic practices within our curriculum, which support the students development of academic and social wellbeing.

By the end of this session, participants will have a better framework for discussing mental wellbeing with their students and embedding good practice within their teaching. This session will be of interest to anyone who teaches, particularly personal tutors and module leads.

Dr Jon Catling is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Birmingham.  He has been Programme lead for the Psychology undergraduate programme, Head of Education for the School of Psychology and is currently the Faculty lead for Access, Participation and Progression – focussing on widening participation.  He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has published a range of papers exploring mental wellbeing in students.

Dr Darrelle Villa is an Assistant Professor in clinical psychology and a Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered clinical psychologist. She is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her teaching interests are in psychological formulation and interventions in the context of adult mental health and how to evaluate them.  Her research focuses on qualitative approaches to making sense of identity and relationships in the context of physical illness and in client experiences of psychological therapy.
