YSJ, Academic Development Programme
Professional Development for Learning, Teaching and Research
A 3.5 hour, in-person, skills-based training opportunity for student-facing colleagues across York St John University.
This session will concentrate on practical ways for professional service staff to engage with, and reduce, a student’s distress.
During the session, participants will:
• Explore the nature of distress
• Look at a case study involving a distressed student and member of staff
• Gain more understanding of practical ways in which we can build a collaborative relationship with a distressed student
• Consider how to maintain the boundaries of our roles, and look after our own wellbeing, in these interactions with students
• Learn how to respond to a student presenting at a high level of distress.
Please note that this training is aimed at professional service staff; a further session for academic staff will follow, as well as more sessions for non-academic staff.
