YSJ, Academic Development Programme
Professional Development for Learning, Teaching and Research
A 3.5 hour, in-person, skills-based training opportunity for academic colleagues across York St John University.
This session will concentrate on practical ways for academic colleagues to engage with, and reduce, a student’s distress.
During the session, participants will:
• Explore the nature of distress
• Review a case study involving a distressed student and member of staff
• Gain understanding of the practical ways in which we can build collaborative relationships with distressed students
• Think about how to maintain the boundaries of our roles, and look after our own wellbeing, in these interactions with students
• Learn how to respond to a student presenting at a high level of distress
Please note that this training is aimed at academic staff; professional service staff should attend the training session on 1 September instead. Future dates for non-academic staff will also be available soon.
