Senior Lecturer In Creative Writing and English Literature
I currently teach on: BA Creative Writing (single and joint honours) and MA Creative Writing. I also supervise MFA and PhD students.
I am also involved with: I am Level 3 Coordinator, which means I am a good contact for first-year undergraduate students with general queries about their studies. With Rebecca Tamás I run the York Centre for Writing Poetry Series.
tell us about yourself!
Where did you study? I have a BA in English Language and Literature from Oxford University, and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas. I came to university teaching after a period writing and researching for think tanks exploring ecology and globalisation.
What is the primary genre you write in? I have written poetry more often than anything else, but more recently I have become interested in areas of crossover between fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
What other genres do you dabble in? These areas of interest come together in a current project called ‘GM Hopkins: Genetically Modifying Poetry Fit for the 21st Century’. I am working with two very talented York St John students to ‘genetically modify’ the work of a favourite poet of mine, Gerard Manley Hopkins.
what have you had published?
A new collection of poetry, Away From Me, will be published in June 2021. Previously I have published a novel, Fatherhood, which won a Northern Writers Award and was longlisted for the Republic of Consciousness Prize, and the poetry collection Bottled Air, which won an Eric Gregory Award and the Melita Hume Prize.
I am working on a book of (I think) autobiographical prose, sections of which have been published in Granta and broadcast on Radio 3. I’m currently interested, in my research, in literary representations of dementia.
