Dear Students,
York St. John Creative Writing students on the 2nd year Working with Words: Publishing and Performance module are calling for submissions for Beyond the Walls, an anthology showcasing YSJ students. Beyond the Walls is published and distributed by Valley Press, Yorkshire’s leading independent publisher.
We are accepting multiple submissions providing the total word count does not exceed 1500 words for flash-fiction, prose, and non-fiction or 45 lines for poetry. Only third year and postgraduate YSJ students may submit. Only ONE piece will be chosen for publication.

The theme for the 2023 edition of Beyond the Walls is AGEING.
We welcome all submissions, genres and interpretations, both abstract and literal. If you find yourself stuck, here are some prompts to consider:
- Ageing of a person, place, or thing
- Cycles of life
- Nostalgia
- Decay and transformation
- Memories (first memory, last memory, etc.)
Please allow yourself to explore the theme and do not limit yourself to the prompts above.
Submission guidelines
- Email Subject Line: Author Name and Form of Submission (e.g. poetry)
- Email Body: Author Name, Programme of Study, Genre of Submission, Word Count
Limits
Maximum total of 1500 words for flash-fiction, prose and non-fiction OR a maximum total of 45 lines for poetry. Reminder, there is no limit for the number of submissions but combined they should not exceed the maximums provided. Again, only ONE piece will be chosen for publication.

Please submit in either a .doc or .docx format, or as a .pdf. Any other forms will not be viable for submission.
The submission window opens midday 27 February 2023 and closes midday 13 March 2023.
