Where Ideas Grow

A blog for students of creative writing at York St John University

you make me S.A.D.

the world keeps on turning
and each year you come back
to taunt me and
play with my mind

you distort my view
and you trick me too
leaving me haunted
by my own ghost

and each year i fall
for your wicked games
until the days grow longer
and the sun decides to linger

oh winter i love you
but our relationship is toxic
and you seem so relentless
in your cruelty.

Sophie Marlowe (she/her) is a queer York-based writer who dabbles in poetry and scriptwriting. She writes about mental health, queerness, romance, witchcraft, folklore and mythology. Her inspiration for ‘you make me S.A.D.’ came from her own thoughts, feelings and experiences around winter. She suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and thought it would be interesting to weave it into the theme.
