Beyond the Walls 2024 Call for Submissions

Calling all third year and postgraduate students!

Submissions for YSJ’s annual Beyond the Walls anthology are now open, welcoming writing of all kinds on the theme of the Unspoken. Whether that be the harrowing secrets of a perfect family, the
sorrow of a voiceless creature or a transformative vision in a crystal ball, unspoken suggests things forgotten, undiscovered and silenced.

Potential topics include:

  • The future
  • Prophecy
  • Identity and marginalised voices
  • Fear
  • Unrequited love

These prompts are not exhaustive so please feel free to interpret Unspoken as you wish.

Writing:

Word Count for Creative Nonfiction and Prose
Up to 1500 words.

Word Count for Poetry
Up to 45 lines.

Multiple submissions are accepted but the total word count must not exceed the above guidelines.
We intend to select only one piece per candidate, however if this changes we will be in touch.

Please email your work to ysjofficial.editorialteam@gmail.com in a .doc, .docx or pdf format. Please include the genre of your writing, (i.e. poetry, fiction, non-fiction) and your name in the email subject.

Artwork:

If you would like to contribute art to appear within the anthology, please contact us through the same email address with “Art” and your name in the subject. Please note this will not be for the cover.

Art can be submitted to accompany written work
Or
Art can be submitted as a stand-alone piece.

Artwork should be in black and white, with no color.
Artwork can be in any style desired as long as the visual fits the theme, but please keep in mind that artwork will be printed on A5 paper size so if pieces are heavily detailed, details may be lost in printing.

We will not accept any images that contain problematic or offensive imagery.

Artwork’s digital files should be in PDF, TIFF, or PNG files and should have a minimum of 300 DPI resolution quality to ensure quality printing.

We encourage art students to submit artwork as well as any 3rd year or postgraduate students with a creative image that follows the submission theme unspoken.

Submissions will close on Monday the 11th of March at 12 noon GMT.

Feedback:

We aim to respond to your work within two weeks of submission. All candidates will receive an email reply confirming their submission.

The anthology will be edited by second year YSJ students and published by Valley Press, an innovative independent publishers based in Scarborough.

We look forward to reading your work!

Thank you,
The Editorial and Production Team.
