YSJ Folklore Submissions Call!

Dear YSJ Students,

It is with great excitement that we welcome you to this year’s YSJ Folklore Anthology! This year we are theming our publication around the theme of HOMELAND, so whether it be written or drawn, we look forward to seeing your submissions!

For the first time EVER, the YSJ Folklore Anthology has the potential to appear in physical print! Authors, this means that you can proudly display your work upon your bookshelves and show it off to friends and family. The greater the interest we receive, the more copies we can distribute to you all, so keep an eye out for our fundraising events coming soon – and spread the word! Any updates can be found over at our Instagram page, @ysjufolklore.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for original writing and artistic interpretations of traditional folktales from around the world, produced exclusively by YSJU students and staff. We welcome folktales from regional cultures across the globe, alongside the lesser known, more localised folktales from here in the UK.

The theme of this year’s anthology is: HOMELAND

What this means is that any submissions must find a way to relate either the folktale or your writing/art to the idea of homeland. Perhaps consider just what the meaning of ‘homeland’ is to you, or how it makes you feel? You could even consider your own connection to the folktales you are sharing.

Written work must be in English and no longer than 1,000 words. If writing poetry, the equivalent word count is 30 lines. We would also welcome a submission of the tale in its original language, which is entirely optional, which must be submitted alongside its English translation. All work must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or PDF format.

Submissions that offer an artistic interpretation of folkloric figures or scenes from around the world are equally as viable. These are to be submitted using the JPEG file format.

All work should be original! AI submissions are not acceptable. Copyright will remain with the creators. Avoid including existing copyrighted materials within your submissions, such as song lyrics, poetry, logos, etc. Any work not in accordance with these guidelines will not be published!

Multiple submissions are welcome, though we ask for no more than three per author/artist as to avoid an overabundance of work from any one individual.

Please keep in mind that submission does not guarantee acceptance. Please await confirmation from us regarding the status of your submission following the deadline, which will be no later than two full weeks following this date. If you have been successful, the edits made to your work will be included in the reply. If you have not heard from us, then your submission has not been successful.

Submissions are to be sent to ysjufolklore@gmail.com no later than Friday 14 March, by 12:00 Midday (GMT). Submissions must be from YSJU email accounts only

Wishing you all the very best with your submissions, and we look forward to receiving and reading them!
