How important is our sense of hearing?
Still a large number of successful deaf athletes
Tamika Catchings was born with a hearing impairment that forced her to later wear hearing aids, despite that, she has had an extremely successful career playing basketball in the WNBA.
How to keep it fair?
Some sports don’t necessarily require individuals to hear, we find that a portion of the deaf community are able to successfully enter a sport of their choosing and excel. We find that some sports allow for the hearing impaired to play with those who can hear perfectly. In most cases however, it is common for there to be a need for a separate ‘league’ or competition for those with the same or similar disability to compete against one another, much like the deaflympics or deaf international basketball federation.
Sports organisations like these allow for deaf athletes to compete fairly with no handicap and to their fullest potential. Making a range of high level sports readily available to the deaf community.
