1) Culture Vultures

Having just started their year as 2017’s City of Culture, Hull is absolutely brimming to the edge with a newly discovered love of culture. From art installations around town, light and sound displays through the City Centres classic destinations as well as poetry, art and local film nights all through year, with a promise of something to do every single night. The people of Hull are glowing with pride and ensuring everyone they know wants to see a bit of this new adventure their ton is making.

2) History in the making

A proud and strong fishing town, Hull has an interesting and varying history. From the local fish trail to the maritime museum, there’s always something new to educate yourself from. With the likes of Amy Johnson, William Wilberforce, Phillip Larkin and Ziggy Stardust’s musician Mick Ronson and the Spiders from Mars, there’s nothing but excitement and intrigue with Hull’s history.

 

 

3) The Local Delicacies

One thing you may not think of when debating Hull is discovering and tasting new food. But the famous Pattie may just change that perception; made from mashed potato, herbs and onions then battered and fried, many people misperceive it as a Fish cake but every Hullensian knows the superiority of the Pattie! Whilst at a chippy trying out the Pattie, why not also try the chip spice waiting on the counter next to the salt. Chip spice may not be solely limited to Hull but it’s a very important condiment in the life on anyone from Hull, concocted of salt, paprika and tomato powder it’s a staple in any chippy and take-away.

4) Fun at the Fair

If you’re looking for a thrill in Hull there’s one main attraction that pulls    almost every resident in, Hull Fair. One of the largest travelling fairs in  Europe, Hull Fair comes along every year during the first week of  October and is a strong signifier to any Hullensian of the coming of the  winter months. Surrounded by huge rides, enticing food stalls and lots  of fun, Hull Fair is a highlight in Hull’s social calendar!

 

 

5) Music to the ears

A strong scene in Hull with many fantastic venues, the music scene is  a passion held in many hearts. Many bands, from Oasis to Pulp and more recently Slaves, have made the trek across the Humber Bridge to play in this wonderful city. With venues like The Adelphi, Fruit and Welly, there are endless possibilities for local music acts, and they definitely make the most of these, especially with Humber Street Sesh, an all-day festival focusing on purely local music talent is always lapped up by locals and visitors alike.

 

6) Sport Central

Sport in Hull is as central as anything else, with the football team Hull City and two rival rugby league clubs, Hull F.C and Hull K.R. The colours you don, black and white (F.C) or red and white (K.R) puts you in one family or the other with a lot of light hearted banter flying throughout the fans during the season, but no more than on Derby Day, when the two teams come face to face and the winning team earns City wide bragging rights. Rugby may be incredibly popular in Hull, but so is football with Hull city being promoted last season they’re leading the City of Culture year as a premier league team!

7) Animal Lovers

Hull has many places to take in a bit of nature if you fancy. From East Park’s animal exhibits to the world’s only Submarium, The Deep, which sits proudly on the Marina, there’s plenty of animals to enjoy. As well as these two large scale and popular sites, there is the Pearson’s Park Wildlife Garden which hosts many small mammals and the Noddle Hill Nature Reserve boasts many pond life creatures!

 

 

8) Party Animals

Revellers always have a fun night in the town, whether trawling down the Avenues up town bars or heading under at the mysterious Spiders; Hull boasts an array of pubs, bars and clubs to suit any style. From the indie grunge venues like Welly and Piper to Garage and R&B clubs like Funktion, there’s something for everyone!

9) The people

Friendly and down-to-earth Hullensians could be argued as the main reason one would want to visit. They’re enthusiasm for their city and punchy northern attitudes are what makes the City so great. They’re not willing to take false criticisms easily and always fight the truth! (As the Sun and the Daily Mail found out.)
