Last Thursday I had the distinct pleasure of attending an evening at the Black Swan in York, with guest performers Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar. Having seen them perform at a folk festival last year I convinced a friend to join me and procured a couple of tickets. The evening was wonderful, about three hours of quality entertainment. The guest performers padded the evening well, for me however there was only one act that had my full attention.
Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have a way of dominating the stage and the room. Their songs and performing capture the attention of everyone with a nice mixture of poignant song and cheerful foot tapping tunes, it was shame there was no room for a bit of a dance. The stage humour and easy going nature of the performance was also a winner. (My favourite line of the evening was when asked if it was a Tenor Bouzouki, Ciaran replied with “It cost about two grand actually”) There isn’t much more I can say to recommend them, the performance speaks for itself. I’m no music critic but having seen them twice and thoroughly loved being there both times i think its safe to say if you enjoy folk, you will enjoy Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar.
A list of venues for September and coming months is on their Facebook page, so go see for yourselves.

If not its well worth listening to their new album The Silent Majority on Spotify or whatever platform you prefer to use.
Have a great day folks!
