Learn with Lynda: Foundations of Teaching with Technology!
As you may know, Information Learning Services has purchased an institutional subscription to Lynda.com, an online video library that provides access to nearly 4000 learning courses in business, software, technology and creative skills. All courses are broken down into bite-size chunks, and have exercise files, captions and transcripts. You can download to watch on your mobile device too. You can also create personalised playlists of courses & videos which can be shared with other users. To get the most out of this great resource, we’re going to highlight a particular TEL-related course or playlist on Lynda.com in a new monthly blog segment we’ve creatively (!) called ‘Learn with Lynda!’
So, to kick us off, October’s recommended Learn with Lynda course is…Foundations of Teaching with Technology with Kevin Kelly.
Kevin’s Lynda.com profile lists him as “a consultant for higher education institutions…with a doctorate of education from University of San Francisco and 15 years of experience teaching educators how to improve their teaching with pedagogical strategies and technology.”
This course starts with the foundations; it considers the relationship between learning outcomes and technology in the classroom, and provides guidance on how to select and apply appropriate technology for your particular activity or module. We regularly blog and deliver workshops on the various aspects of this course – it’s our bread and butter! – and these bite-size videos provide useful starting points for staff interested in incorporating technology into their teaching.
Topics covered include:
- Including technology in your learning outcomes
- Applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
- Finding and creating content and instructional materials
- Enhancing lectures and presentations with technology
- Getting students involved
- Facilitating in-class activities
- Assessing learning
- Teaching effectively online
The full course lasts 2h 30mins, or you can use the side-menu and search bar to navigate to particular sections according to your interests and level of experience.
Don’t forget to let us know what you think of the course! Was it helpful? Was there anything you would add? Any takeaways you can apply to your teaching or would like to explore further?

Note: These posts are primarily aimed at our York St John staff/student readers as Lynda.com is a subscription service which requires a YSJ username and password for access. But don’t be jealous, there’s lots of useful free info on our blog too 🙂
