7 of the Best 7 Things
Part of the role of the Technology Enhanced Learning team is to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, assessment and creative inquiry in higher education, and in particular at York St John University.
The 7 Things You Should Know About… series are a collection of quick reads which provide essential information on emerging technologies and practices, including potential implications and opportunities.
The 7 Things You Should Know About… series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. (http://www.educause.edu/)
Here are my 7 of the Best 7 Things – jargon-free, quick overviews for time-pressed colleagues:
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CONNECTED LEARNING
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT COLLABORATIVE LEARNING SPACES
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FLIPPED CLASSROOMS
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BADGES
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SOCIAL CONTENT CURATION
- 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GAMES AND LEARNING / 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GAMIFICATION *
*Okay, technically that is 8, but I thought it would be worth grouping the last 2 together to help explain the difference between Gamification and Game-Based Learning!
I wrote this blog post so those are my 8 of the best 7 Things, but I thought it would be good to ask Róisín & Daniel if there were any they’d like to swap out, here’s what they chose…
“I’d have chosen the same ones as you! Although I do like the 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MICROLECTURES brief. A microlecture is a short recorded audio or video presentation on a single, tightly defined topic, and they’re a great way for staff to explore using video tools in their teaching in a concise and focussed way.” Róisín
“I’d have chosen 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT INFOGRAPHIC CREATION TOOLS in my top 7! These tools allow users to create infographics without needing any specialist skills or knowledge, and these infographics can be used to introduce or explain a concept or research findings in a visually appealing way!” Daniel
So, technically this blog post could/should have been called ’10 of the Best 7 Things’, and could easily have included more great examples, so why not visit the EDUCAUSE website to view the complete 7 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT… LEARNING TECHNOLOGY TOPICS, and share your favourite or most useful in the comments below…
