For the sequence task the briefing was that I had to create a sequence that displayed my subject being ‘called by another person and realising that they had forgotten to meet said person’. The briefing also said that the sequence had to have a maximum duration of 1 minute whilst also showing establishing shots, close-ups, cutaways and also an understanding of the 180 degree rule.
Firstly, I drew up a storyboard of 6 frames. This showed my subject firstly walking through an archway towards the camera. Then my subject would still be walking but the camera would cut to another angle, showing my subject side on walking to the right and out of frame. My subject would then answer their phone and turn back the way they had come from. It would then show that my subject was supposed to have been with a friend who they had forgotten to meet. In my story board the friend would also be showing obvious signs of disappointment and annoyance.
On the day of filming I had to change the location for my sequence due to torrential rain. This was a precaution I had to take due to health and safety issues. Wet weather could lead to slip hazards.
This also meant that I also had to make alterations to my storyboard. For example, I had planned on using an archway for my subject to walk under but this had to be changed into a doorway. This also acted as a positive as I decided to film in a theatre room. This provided me with props to use such as a set; which was a fake wall with a window.
I also decided that my sequence would not contain dialogue. This was because my subject did not feel comfortable speaking while being filmed. In order to demonstrate a phone call was taking place I did an over-the-shoulder-close-up of my subject on their phone. I was also able to use a backdrop which appeared to be a window of a room. This gave the illusion that the subject was now in a different location and helped to further the story.
My sequence was intended to have another person in it at the end. This person would have appeared at the end of the sequence as the person who had been forgotten about by the subject of my video. However, due to that person having other commitments, I had to change the story to my sequence. Instead of my subject meeting with their disappointed friend they instead found a note which explained that they had ‘taken too long’ and that their friend was no longer there as they did not want to wait.
One change I would make to my sequence task is that at the end I would have liked to have another person in the sequence. This would have allowed me to display my understanding of the 180-degree-rule to a greater effect. When reflecting upon this task using Kolb’s Learning Cycle, I believe that I should have had a better plan B for this situation such as having an extra person that I could call upon in case one of the subjects of my task could not attend the production of the task.
