Photography Task

For the photography task I decided to choose the theme of ‘York River’. I chose this theme as I felt that the York River would provide me with various different photo opportunities.
The task briefing for the photography task was to provide six photographs; all demonstrating different photography techniques
As I had decided to take my photographs on the York River I knew that there would be health and safety measures that I would have to address regarding working near water. According to BBC’s official health and safety guidelines regarding working near water, hazards such as slipping, tripping or falling into water are the most common. Therefore, when filling out my health and safety form I added this as a potential hazard and decided that in order to avoid this hazard I would avoid any uneven ground. If working with a subject, I decided that the best course of action to take would be to stand at least 6 feet away from the edge of the river so that if either of us were to fall we would land on the floor as opposed to the water.
For the forced perspective picture I chose to use a person in comparison to a boat that was on the river. The idea was that it would appear that the person was holding the boat in their hand. Getting this photo required good communication between myself and the person in the photo as the boats were also moving therefore I had to time the photo right. This photo took a few attempts to get right as I would get the timing wrong on a few occasions.
For the long exposure photo, I chose to wait until it was dark to get my photo as this meant it would be less difficult. I got a photo of the York River and the houses next to it. This meant that the light from the houses, as well as the reflection from the river, had an effect of ‘light painting’.
For the reflection picture I chose to take a picture of the river with a reflection of the trees on the river bank. This was a hard photo to get as I had to wait until the rivers current was very light in order to get a clear reflection.
For the frame within a frame picture I chose to use a circular hole in the bridge above the river as the frame for a photo of a boat. Once again, this relied on the factor of timing. I had to wait around 45 minutes for a boat to come but once a boat turned up taking the photo was simple and straightforward.
For the silhouette picture I decided to use the trees on the riverside as the sun setting behind them provided an ideal light source for a silhouette photo to be taken. I had to find a spot to take the photo where trees from my side of the river did not get in the way.
For the shallow depth of field picture, I chose to take a picture of a bluebell flower that was on the riverside. I felt this was a good choice as it stands out from the largely green background of the photo.
