Description

A faded ghost sign on a large three-story building once displayed ‘Aitken Cutlers and Opticians’ in black against a bright white background, with a thin dotted line underscoring the text.

 

History

Aitken & Co. was established in 1820. Initially managed by Henry Martin Aitken until his death in 1874, the company was subsequently led by his son, Henry Horatio Aitken.

 

Aitken & Co. was renowned for its diverse offerings as depicted in an advertisement from the era. The firm served as cutlers, opticians, and surgical equipment suppliers.

 

Their premises were located at 13 Micklegate, later renumbered to 27, with an additional location on what was then known as George Hudson Street, now Railway Street.

Adorned with multiple signs, the building proudly displayed the business’s array of offerings:

 

Hy. Aitken & Co., Surgical Appliance Makers, Cutlers & Opticians. Railway Street. Spectacles & Folders, Motor Goggles, Field & Opera Glasses. Oculists Prescriptions carried out promptly and accurately. Razors ground & set. Cutlery Repaired. Elastic Stockings etc. Trusses Made To Measure & Repaired. Children’s Trusses.

By 1913, Henry Martin Aitken was still actively managing both locations, ensuring the company’s reputation for quality and diverse product offerings was maintained.
